Jury Duty!

I've been called up for jury duty any number of times but have never been chosen to serve. So it was a bit of a surprise to survive voir dire and end up on a jury for a Hunt County Justice of the Peace court in TX. I must say it was perfect timing from a practical standpoint and since I was not fretting about missing teaching school (and preparing emergency lesson plans and labs!) I found myself enjoying the experience. It was two parts "Law and Order" and one part "Legally Blonde" and I don't mean that in a disparaging way. It was a speeding offense and watching how the young prosecutor, deputy, defendant, and judge all interacted was fascinating. Then it was deliberation time and the need for us to come to a unanimous verdict based solely on observations and facts and NOT on an interpretation (or on any assumptions) of the evidence offered. I can honestly say I'm glad I finally had a chance to serve!
