Day Trippin in Texas

Having a working ranch with critters means it's hard to get away as a couple for a vacation. Now I'm not complaining, mind you. I love being able to sit at my kitchen table, snapping fresh green beans for Sunday dinner, and seeing my appys in the pasture. But it does make going away a bit tricky.
My hubby Paul went away in early July for a family reunion in Iowa/Nebraska and I'm going to go to KY this week to Breyerfest. But we are making time to do some daytrips together around our part of Texas.
We first went to the town of Cooper in Delta County, NE Texas. There is an old drugstore there with a working soda fountain, still staffed by a very spritely grandmotherly lady who has worked there for over 60 years. While the drugstore part wasn't a business anymore it did have some cool old fixtures and displays. And the soda fountain drinks were good too!

Tomorrow we're going to Terrell TX to visit a fruit orchard. One of the things I miss about not living in MD or NY anymore is the lack of fruit stands in TX. So I was very happy to discover that a very large orchard and store isn't that far from where we live (remember in Texas something not far means it isn't a day's drive LOL). So we are going to Ham's Orchard to check out the peaches (and peach ice cream!) http://www.hamorchard.com/

Then when I get back from KY we hope to fit in one or two more day trips. I also hope to do some quick side trips on the way back from KY since I won't be carrying anything in the van that is heat sensitive this year! I'd like to see if I can go visit this place in TN http://www.tennesseeriverpearls.com/index.php and in the Fall I definitely want to make it to AR: http://www.byways.org/explore/byways/2485/

One of the mistakes I made when I lived in the DC area was to keep putting off doing things and going places, because I lived there and it was so close I could do it "whenever". Well, now I'm back in TX and I never did make it to some of the historic and scenic areas in MD and VA that were so close LOL. It definitely makes me appreciate my childhood summer vacations with my parents!
