A few months ago I purchased an H-R Lippet that was sold as broken. When he arrived he had three broken legs and a chipped ear. So I put him up for a while to ponder what to do with him.
First thing I did was refire him to remove any organic gunk. Since he had three legs broken I stilted him. When I opened the kiln, he had bent the support rod and the fourth leg had come unglued as well! Luckily when he bent the support rod he didn't touch anything in the kiln or the side of the kiln!
I spent the next couple of weeks repairing his broken legs and rebuilding his ear. Once I had him stablized I fired him to cone 04.
Then I applied underglaze (artic white), fired to cone 06, added more white underglaze, refired. Then I glazed him with Duncan opaque white glaze and fired to cone 06.
Then I started china painting him in layers of gray, black, and white. I envisioned him becoming an Indian pony. After four firings to cone 016 of china paint, I had the leopard pattern I was looking for and added the colorful American Indian symbols to him with china paints and refired.
In the meantime I used a polymer clay feather mold to cast the feathers I wanted to attach to him and his war bridle. Once I had the feathers cast, I fired them to bisque, glazed them, and then china painted them on both sides. I then attached the feathers to the Lippet along with the hemp bridle.
I am pleased with the final results. He has gone to a new home and I hope she is pleased with him. I'm glad I could save a really badly damaged Lippet and in the process learn a lot about repairing chinas and reglazing a damaged piece.
