I really like the idea behind this site Global Giving . I don't know much about it but they've been around since 2002, have great references, and look to be doing great work with small amounts. Perhaps an alternative to the ever-present push for more consumerism during the Christmas season. They cover all facets of charity work, from Horses to Solar Cookers and more.
Another great idea is Small Business Saturday. It's hard for the hand-crafted boutiques, or even Mom-and-Pop hardware stores to compete with the big box stores. It may cost a bit more but I try to shop local and buy organic and Buy Handmade when possible.
