China painted donkey

A few years ago I bought a box of china animals on eBay. One of the pieces was a funky little donkey that had been stained a muddy brown. I fired off the stain and he came out of the kiln bright orange. That turned out to be the stain turned to a powder by the firing. It came off easily and I had a glossy white bisque donkey, who went onto the shelf in the studio and sat two years. This weekend I decided he/she would be a good candidate to try china painting some pinto markings on.

This is the first layer of color after firing. The color looks odd because I'm trying a new technique, and trying to make the coat texture apparent.

One nice thing about china painting, if it doesn't work, you can always fire it off and start over!
