This is a piece that has quite a history. He is a OOAK porcelain Norman by Laurie Jo Jensen. He was sent to me as a bisque and I underglazed him all in black for the owner to etch. As it turned out, the surface was miserable for etching, porcelain being so hard. So she returned him to me as a gift and I pondered what to do to him to try to salvage him.
First step, I completely underglazed him with several coats of Duncan artic white. I refired him, then added more white underglaze, refired him, then began to add black spots. Each time I added spots, I would refire, recoat with white, and then repaint the spots, but smaller, so as to get a peacock halo effect. Eventually I added roaning, pinking, mottling, hoof striping, and, before the last underglaze firing, I did his eyes in three shades of brown. After the last firing, I glazed his mane and tail with black transparent gloss glaze, his body with clear glaze, and his hooves with transparent brown glaze. Then I held my breath, and refired to cone 06. That was the 12th firing LOL.
And this is the result. He ended up with the original black bleeding through, but it adds to the roaning effect. His eyes, with the blue/black pupil, have the lustre of life, even under extreme close-ups, and he took a second place ribbon and NAN card last week in workmanship at Tejas Live in a large "other" CG class under an excellent china judge.
So I'm very pleased with how he turned out!
